Quail Coop

I have my quail in a 10'x 10' pen & that works great. I was wondering if I put a enclosed COOP, I was thinking a BOx or a couple dog crates. in there would they go inside (like Chickens ) after dark?Now they sit inside a water bucket tipped over with straw in it most all day.

Not sure why you want them to be able to go inside of a coop. I live below Atlanta, too, and mine stay in their cages year round with no box to get in. They do really well. It never really gets THAT cold here, anyway. They lay their eggs right on the wire or the open sand box. I do have coturnix quail so bobwhites might behave a little different. I have raised bobwhites the same way many times and never had a coop for them.

Most of mine are in a rabbit hutch right now and they all go into the "hutch" part of it at night. During the day they are out in the cage part of it.

I have 5 others in a modified playhouse coop. They will either perch on some logs I have in there under the coop part or covey up on the floor under the coop part.

I've got a large setup like you do. I have half a dog crate inside there for them to get out of the rain, and of course, to keep the feed from getting wet. Unless it was REALLY windy, they loved to just chill outside in the tall grass that grew up through the pen. The rain didn't seem to bother them

I put a large 2-story birdhouse in my quail habitat and they loved the thing. I had to cut the openings larger, but that was the only modification made. It was one a local fellow made, and had much larger dimensions than what I've found mass-marketed. All 6 of my coturnix fit in the lower level just fine!

I have a rabbit hutch pen and the inner part the quail only go in to lay eggs and to eat (as thats where i put their feed). It can be a torential down pour and they are on the wire... no idea why they do that.

Then i have two 6 hole pens, these are tarped on the tops, and in the winter they are completely enclosed in tarps (as is the rabbit hutch pen). they do fine......


however im in south western Pennsylvania in the mountains it's MUCH colder here lol.

I've been wondering about putting a small covered litterbox in the hutch for shelter?

I was thinking as my birds are for sale ALIVE or dead . it would be nice to try and train them to go inside for an easy catch. . They are not so easy to grab just loose in the pen.. If I used dog grates for there roost box I could just shut the door & count them??
