Yeah i used 1/4 inch for a brooder pen once and even on the little guys the poop just caked on it. 1/2 inch is the only way to go as far as wire goes. I hear that 1" x 1/2 inch also works good but I like the 1/2 inch sqaure myself.

Ok ya I will definitely go with the 1/2 inch wire then.

Not an expert but researching this I have found half inch by half inch wire, with a pan of sand for dusting and maybe a small piece of wood to get them off the wire to "rest"the feet works well. I plan on using quarter by quarter inch wire in my trransition pens for the chicks. Then moving onto the larrger wire for the growing pens. The main thing is to keep them super clean and in my opinion the wood makes for harder clean up. Make sure the wire is free of "burrs", using a file to remove them and you should be Ok.
The dusting pan is used to maintain the feathers,help with the heat and seven dust can be added to keep lice and mites at bay. In the wild they will often find a patch of sand or dirt to "bath" in. Just a few things I have read. Good Luck!

oh ok thanks for the tip i will return the roll of quarter inch before i open it and switch for half inch thanks a lot

The 1/4" makes good sides - Send it to me if you haven't taken it back lol!

I just made a rabbit hutch with wooden stakes nailed to the bottom.. There is a (very heavy!) tray on the very bottom to catch the poo. it was originally meant for eggs, but they have taken to laying in their boxes, to my relief. You should NOT, absolutely not make the bottom wire. My hutch does not have a square foot for each quail, but i put them on the ground into an appropriate-sized cage everyday.Wire-bottomed cages are not for quail. their feet are for solid floors, not for grappling.

i keep one of my groups of quail on a wire raised floor. i think they are the cleanest looking ones and the easiest pen by far to maintain. my ground pens are a pain in the butt to clean i have to get on my hands and knees and climb into them to scoop everything.
I put a squarefoot area for them with bedding and some hay so they have a rest from the wire. they thrive in these conditions.

I am posting some pictures of my happy quail in their ground cage.

the bottom is not wired.

i got this guy along with the others. he has a curved neck, but he's got his own way of seeing things.. his name is Myro.Hey, i want to know, does anyone have quail that are molting? mine are. there's this one that i call Vulture, and his neck feathers are finally coming through.

Do you have trouble finding the quail eggs on the ground?
