...yeah..i am shutting the room up for tonight so the cats cant get in there..then in the morning i am moving them to another cage.....i sure hope these things dont come in threes...i had to bring my piglet to the vets (emergency) yesterday because he aspirated(sp?) while eating...
We live and learn from these sort of things, I know it's very sad but I truely believe that everyone who owns birds at one time or another either has one of their other aniamls kill a bird (or birds), or they accidentally kill or injure one some how. Not toolong ago my male cat got into my brooder and had ahold of my one young male button...luckily i walked naer him while he was prepairing to kill/eat him, i thought my cat had a toy...but it ddint look like any toy i had ever seen...so i kneeled down, and sure enough it was my little quail. He was still alive, with only a scratch on his breast, he hung on (even ate and drank) all night long all day long but died around midnight the next night...i was very sad...my cat got a smack on the bum...but he wont learn.
I just have to do better at keeping him out of the bedroom..when i go outside i make sure no cats are in the bedroom and i shut the door so they can't sneak an attack.
I am so sorry for your loss! I dont mean to say you did anything wrong so please dont take this the wrong way but I am curious, if you think the cats could ahve goten them through the wire, it sounds like the wire spacing is too wide? Just a question, because if so, your quail may have escaped all on their own and the cats just did what they do best.
Seems like lately everyones been loosing buttons to their pets (cats and dogs).
I'm glad you have some left still...keep an eye on that poor girl with teh wing boo boo hopefully it's a claw mark and not a bite...cat bites are very deadly to birds.
*BIG HUGS*!!!!
Hi monarch!..thanks so much for the story and the advice!... i'm pretty positive that the birds didnt escape through the bars(even though they are kinda wide..)...i can tell because of the blood on the inside of the cage..and the feathers right outside the cage with the little wing there also..like it was ripped through the bars..(god..i feel so bad!)...and lesson learned!..i am moving them in the morning...i just still cant believe they got them...yeah..i'll have to keep a real close eye on them..i know cat saliva is deadly to birds...poor little things....i'm giving my cats the evil eye right now...(even though its not their fault..its mine)...i'm still doing this>>>
Is it like a bird cage? I know they make those plastic shields for the bottoms of bird cages to keep them from scratching their feed all over your floors (like they work HAH!), but those would work real well to keep the kitties out. The ones i have seen were about 6 inches, so idk, maybe you could get two of them?

Hi shelly..its a guinea pig/rabbit cage..the bottom is like 6 inches of plastic..and the top wire(the kind you get a petco..)..i guess the bars are to wide though..if my cats can get a paw in there...i have a flight cage with real small spacing(its like for finches and such)..but, there is no pan at the bottom to put the shavings for them..the wire goes all the way to the bottom...i'll have to look around my basement..see what i have for cages..good idea about the netting though..maybe i can use it with my flight cage..thanks, wendy
...i am eyeballing my cats now..trying to find the one (or ones) that did it....i think it may be my Rosco Kitty..he's my mouser/bug killer champion....
see redhen, you're not the only one who's had accidents with their birds. PLease don't blame yourself too much we all make mistakes no matter how much we mean well it happens, just grow from this and it really seems like you are with plans already to fix things up a bit.
I am glad that you aren't one to blame the cats though...i smacked my boys bum but ha...didnt phase him. I could see some people throwing their animals outside for something like taht...(mostly because when i was younger and my cat at the tiem killed my parakeets while i was at school...when i came home to my room full of bird feathers...and my cat locked in my bedroom (my parents locked him in thre wheni specifically asked them not to)....when my dad heard me crying, he grabbed my indoor only cat and threw him outside....i was devistated...not only did i lose my birds, but i lost my cat....I still dont forgive my dad for that. That's just something you dont do to your child especially when it was your (my dads) fault for him ebing locked in my bedroom wiht my birds in the first place) this was over 7 years ago bu tit still upsets me today.
we've all been there, or will be there (where you are tonight) at some point...it sucks but we have eachothers support. I hope things are better for you tomorrow!

Thanks Monarc...you are awesome!..ALL you guys are great!..
......my hubby is outside now burying them..i feel bad for him also..he was starting to like the little guys..and he's the one that found them...and, i'm so sorry to hear about your parakeet AND the kitty! i would have been heartbroken also!....and, no, i never blame an animal..they are just doing what is natural to them..i blame myself!.....it was my responsibility to make sure the cats couldnt get their paws through the cage bars.(thats why i am hurting right now..i let those babies down., and that really bothers me.)...thanks for helping guys!..Wendy,
