Colour is the last thing that comes onto a quails egg, want proof?

Ok, so a while back (like a month ago), my quails had like a 4 day egg-bound-a-thon, they were super egg-bound and i had to manually help em lay eggs, so basically i helped em nice and slowly and they would all be white and some parts looked wet, these parts were transparent were the shell didn't cover fully, (quail eggs have two layers, chicken eggs do to but they're different). Anywho, i helped another hen out and this time i did it really slowly and as i did i saw the egg coming out very slowly having colour on it, and some of it was still white though. (I don't know if that proves anything but, that's my own experience)

What, i'm trying to get at is that the same breed will lay different lightness and darkness, and different spot patterns, 'cause the colour is the last stage.

I understand varying shades and patterns but I've seen some with dark brown eggs or olive green eggs with the brown pigment on top and was wondering if that is from a particular breed or just that it varies that much.

Mine are all Coturnix Quail. They vary in color. Manchurian Gold. Italian speckled and gold. Jumbo Brown Texas A&M Tuxedos. Kinda like Quarter horses. A variety of colors. But the same breed of horse. I imagine that button eggs are smaller and bobwhites may not be colored, I think I heard that somewhere.... But even if you got all of one color of Coturnix Quail your eggs will be different each time.

Yup, they really do vary that much from day to day. I love quail eggs! The hen's system quite literally "paints" the color over a creamy white shell. They're even painted in high gloss! Sometimes one will skip the painting altogether, and you end up with a white egg.

Thanks to the OP for the info on medicinal uses--I had no idea. So cool.

They are also the tastiest eggs possible. So unbelievably yummy.

Coturnix love to paint their eggs but other species of quail have different eggs. Button quail lay brown eggs with black spots. Bobwhites lay white eggs. And so on and so forth.
