we were on vacation almost 2 weeks and came home to2 very determined broody hens and the quail pen full of egs scatered allover.on a whim i took the quaileggs and put them under the hens. now they have started hatching. i got some quail feed and put 4 babies in a box with a light and pine shavings. but i've never had baby quail before. they are soooo tiny!!! and the cutest things ever.but i dont know if the wood shavings are the right thing, or if they have any other particular needs.
also,if i leavesomeof themwith the hens will they raise them? it doesnt seem safe since they are so very tiny and the hens are so big! but the hens seem to want them.
i'm open to advice.

thanks. we did crush up the food and they are pecking at it. we took out 4 chicks, then when we checked again we found some more eggs hatched but no chicks to be found. i wonder if the remaining eggs would hatch under the heat lamp with the 4 chicks. the hens obviously cant be trusted.

I really wish I could leave my farm for a 2 week vacation. Kudos for that!

The first question. What species of "Quail" are we talking about?

Mt. Baker Quail :

Do not leave the chicks with the hens, the hens may kill them and the chicks can catch a disease called coryza from the chickens.
