1 sq. foot per bird is fine, but I wouldn't build it 30" deep to hard to reach in and get the eggs, stay with 24" deep. If you use 1/2" x 1" wire on the bottom you will have no problem with their poop and their feet are plenty big for this wire if they are adults. Are you going to put a rooster with your hens if so you may want to make pens smaller in length you don't want more than 1 roo with up to 6 hens. My pens have egg roll out and water and feed on the outside to make everything easy. I'll include a couple pictures maybe give you some idea what you want.
