ANDY I think you need to research the nutrition content of soybeans there bubba... full spectrum b vitamins and 11 amino acids. And as far as no animal products.... can you say MAD COW DISEASE? Ever see any dead possums on the side of the road being eaten by quail or pheasants? I have'nt. But i have had a few SERIOUSLY SWEET days in soybean fields bustin bobs....

they do get animal protein from insects though, nothing makes quail happier than a nice juicy mealworm
if only we could get a food fortified with insects.... (not accidentally lol)

Soybeans attract a lot of insects.... Birds will eat their fill on insects if they can before they go after the greens. We just use other protein sources in feed because it's more readily available (waste from butchering for human consumption) and we aren't very good at raising insects. Feeder insects come with their own risks and generally aren't as nutritionally complete as they should be because of the bland diets they are fed.

I have raised quail on 22% gamebird feed. It's all I can get here. They survived with no major health issues or losses. However they do much better in all aspects if I mix in a high protein dog food or high quality cat food. For the buttons since they eat so little I can afford to actually go with a dog kibble that has nothing but red meat in it. They do spectacular on it and even their colors are much richer. That was really not cost effective when I was raising 200 coturnix at once for meat so I had to find cheaper sources of animal protein. Since the chickens were laying like mad and half my fridge was eggs they got a lot of scrambled and hard boiled chicken eggs as well as various meat leftovers boiled and even a few chicken carcasses that way.

Mad cow disease came from feeding brain matter that was questionable meat quality in the first place to herbivores. Quail and chickens are not herbivores, we are not feeding brains, and hopefully we are finding good quality meat that if it were a better cut would be fit for human consumption. The crap they throw in feeds designed for entirely herbivorous animals is really sad.

Quail kept in cages won,t get any protein from bugs, perhaps a mosquito or two on occasion and that providing they are kept outdoors.

I do not claim to be expert on nutrition, the fact is as I stated before that my quail feed exclusively Purina Game bird developed Vit B deficiency.

This deficiency dissapeared very soon after I switched to other brand, I believe it was Nutrena at the time.

And I know for sure no plant contains Vit B12, it is foud only in animals products.


Speaking about junk put in commercial feed in general, that,s a fact, just like junk put in processed human food.

All hoopla and propaganda shoveled down our troats by feed industry and most vets that anything else but commercial stuff fed to animals is harmful, is obviously protecting their interest.

I feed my chicks all kitchen scraps exept greasy. spicy and salty stuff, also all kind of grains including whole oats, and some wild bird mix as a supplement beside crumble or pellets. They love it and thrive on it.

I will experiment with quail also as far as alternative foods are concerned.

Somehow all domestic animals and birds survived and thrived for millenia without commercial feed which was developed not long before WW2 I believe.

How about all magnificent chicken breeds like RIR,s Rocks, Wayandottes etc.?

Theese were developed long before commercial feed was invented.
