Quail Questions 101

Well Dad just called he is wanting me to raise him 100 quail this spring. I know nothing about quail. Could you please answer these questions:
1. What do you feed them?
2. How long does it take them to feather out?
3. Are they brooded similarily to chickens?
4. If kept until Adults what kind of housing do they require?

What type of quail?

1. What do you feed them?
Unmedicated Gamebird crumbles 28% or higher

2. How long does it take them to feather out?
Depends on quail....Coturnix about 7 weeks to maturity, Button quail 7.5-8 weeks, Bobwhite....someone else can answer

3. Are they brooded similarily to chickens?
Yep

4. If kept until Adults what kind of housing do they require?
For a hundred, a pen would suffice, Aviary cages, rabbit hutches.

Q1. Feed them an unmedicated game bird startes with atleast 26% protein
Q2. They will fully feather out by 4 weeks of age
Q3. Yes, it is almost exactly the same.
Q4. I would give them a cage with a wire floor and 3 wooden sides.
When chicks keep shallow waterers.

Spece Makes A Big Difference

Coturnix- About 4 Wks To Full Feathering 8 Wks Or So To Full Size
Bobs 4-5 Wks Feathering And 24-30+ Wks Full Size Depending On The Strain

Both Eat Gamebird Starter Minimum 28% Protien, Unmedicated Is Usually Preferred
They Are Brooded Like Chicken Babies, But Do Have Some Slightly Different Requirements--- They Are 1000x's More Cold Sensitive And Huddle 10x's Faster Than Chicken Babies... Also They Are 4wheel Drive, But Clumbsy--- If They Get Wet By Falling In Your Water Font They Are Likely Dead. They Drown Very Easily-- Once Wet If They Dont Drown They Will Die From Hypothermia In Minutes.

Once Feathered And Comfortable With Outside Temperatures They Do Best In Elevated Wire Floor Pens That Need To Be Quite Predator Proof As They Are Fast Food For Any Wouldbe Predator For 3 Counties In Any Direction.
