Quail questions

:eek:Hmm, that's interesting.

Well, I suppose part of the reason my male quail are so flighty and scared all the time is that they are kept alone, separated from both the females and from each other. The females are so much calmer and happier without them, and the males obviously can't be kept together, so there is no other option.
The males are fine together as long as they have some distractions. Add one female though, and all h*ll breaks loose.

@father0fnine The shed is just over 6 feet and the run is more like 1 foot but I read that quails are ok with low ceiling heights and high ceiling heights, its more the medium heights that are dangerous.
And @Xouie thanks for the heads-up! I wouldn't have thought of that! 😰

Oh @joannas11 one bit of random advice: if your quail decide to be tame, you’ll absolutely want to shuffle your feet whenever you’re in the shed. They are adorable but just not very smart. (I had a devastating experience with my very first batch in a walk-in setup some years ago.)
Yes !!!! Always always watch feet and doors !!!

Yeah. I accidentally stepped on one once. I've been careful to the point of paranoia ever since.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone that helped with all my questions. I got my quails this week and they have settled in nicely.
I think that I've been lucky in finding a breeder who has handled the quail a lot as babies so they are quite tame and chilled. I haven't seen any of the panicked flying around that I was worried about.
I installed a board across the door and two overlapping strips of mesh fabric from the ceiling which are fastened with velcro to the board. This has made going in and out feel a lot more secure than it would be without.
You can see in the picture my watering system which has taught me some amateur plumbing! They're still kicking dirt in which is what I was trying to avoid so I am going to try raising it.
So far the deep litter method is great - they poo a lot so I can see how it saves maintenance.
And we've had loads of eggs! 😁
