Quail Snacks...

My pens each get their circular chick feeder filled up about every other day (theres 4-5 birds per pen to this aluminum chick feeder that you can buy at tractor supply) annnd i'd say that container thing holds about a cup of feed so they more than likely go througha half a cup of feed a day per 4-5 birds? *GUESS*. I just refill lol.

I try to atleast once a week give them suppliments... but more is always better but i'd give them atleast a day or two to only eat theier feed so they dont get malnutritioned.

mine are spoiled rotten

they get canned corn -- mashed potatoes -- cooked rice -- any veggies left over from dinner -- I also grow grass seeds in swallow dishes and every couple of days I give them little mini yards that need to be mowed LOL

they also get breads and LOVE blueberry muffins LOL

told you mine were spoiled

Yeah, I agree, whenever you try them on something new, they will first act like you are poisoning them. Mine even did this with worms (mainly nightcrawlers...my 4 y/o is definitely a BOY!

). Eventually they get used to it, and most times love it. But like any other animal, there will be things that the other birds love that you'll have one or two turn their nose up at.

Niki~~Can you germinate the millet in parakeet seed? Or is it treated with something? What millet do you use to germinate for them? I'm thinking 'dust bath with a twist'

Well then, looks like I need to be getting some more sand and soil, and another pack of gladware bowls! That's what they all use for dust baths, the gladware. It's very useful, works for just about anything!

And I get the 3 lb. bag of millet, it's cheaper and has the same amount in it

Oh you can even germinate them in just soaked paper towels if you'd like works like a charm. wet teh paper towel..sprinkle on a layer of millet, then cover with another wet towel and I used to normally open the towel for about a half hour a day and then put i tback on (and mist the towels with water) by day 3 you got the germination started with roots and soon after leafies!

the millets become much more nutritioous when allowed to germinate hence...more spoiling our quailies!! now i need ot get some millet too! LOL!

What about spent grains from a microbrewery that's walking distance from my apartment? I like the idea of free food.

Any idea what percent protein it is and how much of that I can get away with feeding them? If I kept the game bird feed available at all times and put down the spent grains and took it away before it spoiled, just like I would with treats, they could self regulate?

A friend of mine told me to grow grass in in a plate, when it grows a few inches high to place it in the quail coop. He says his quail go nuts for it. Has anyone every heard of this and does it have any nutritional value to it?
