Quail sounds

Hi, I have an 8 week old female Coturnix Quail. She is healthy, laying eggs, eating and drinking well, very curious. I am wondering about a sound she makes and I’m pretty sure I know what it means but I’d like to hear from anyone here. When I am home she has mostly free reign in my apartment. When she wants my attention she sounds like a cricket. Every once in a while if I walk away from her too quickly when she is following me, she whines almost like a whistling tea kettle. I’m pretty sure it means something like “wait for me, or don’t leave me”. It’s the only time I hear her make the sound. Any thoughts from anyone?

Probably! They are very social and without other birds she is probably a little lonely. Have you thought about getting her a buddy?

Well I don't know much about quail sounds but I also have corturnix quail. Sometimes my quail make that sound when they wander around my house and get too far from each other. I think it just means that she doesn't want to be alone.

The way I ended up with her is so random but long story short, one of my students raised her from hatching and I took her 3 weeks ago. Getting a buddy isn’t an option right now but I’m doing my best to keep her entertained and healthy. Most likely in a couple of months she is going to get paired with another female that my student kept. Her quail isn’t showing signed of being lonely or depressed and so far mine (molly) isn’t really either. If and when either happens we will work out a system of getting them back together. Thanks for you reply, I’m definitely learning as I go and she is a pretty funny bird, and very bright.

You could check on Craigslist to get her a couple of buddies. 3 coturnix shouldn't require any more care than 1, aside from slightly more frequent cage cleanings and them eating more food.

In the meantime, if you put a mirror in her cage and another somewhere in the apartment, low to the ground where she can see it, that should make her happier. A small plushie, a large pompom, or even a rolled up sock in her cage might help, too, just to give her something to snuggle with while you're not there.

A small plushie, a large pompom, or even a rolled up sock in her cage might help, too, just to give her something to snuggle with while you're not there.

They might fight at first but they usually settle things out. Having a little carrier cage to set the new ones in and let them see but not touch at first for a few days helps a lot.
