Hi everyone im trying to decide between quails and chickens. I would like to ask those of you that have had both which you think is better from both an egg laying and pet perspective. (I believe that you can eat quail eggs. Right?) Also those that have only owned one or the other please tell me what you like and dislike about them.

Thanks a million!

well, it does take a lot more quail eggs to make an omlet.....

I have had quail and now I have chickens.

I can honestly say, other than being very cute, there is not a single thing that I enjoyed about the quail. They never became tame.

My chickens are like pets with benefits. I would never go back to quail. (maybe just a pair for fun)

thats why I like quail. I get attached to my chickens. They all have names, their quirks and personalities. My quail on the other hand?! My Coturnix act like cornish X's

No personality, grows fast, tastes wonderful!!!!!!!!!

The nice thing about quail is that they grow out and start laying eggs REAL quick..... take less feed, you can easily keep more in a smaller area.... And take less time to hatch..... ok 4 days less but still!!!!

Non-friendly? Mine eat out of my hand. If you dont raise them from a chick you're not going to get hand feeders out of them and they will be afraid. And some varieties no matter what are skiddish. THough I have dark red tibetans that will eat out of my hand as well and cry for me when i come. Food IS their fuel. Also my cornish chickens are friendly too and comical BOYD! LOL!

ETA raising them from a chick and handling them daily (to get pets out of them). My quail are friendlier than many of my hand raised chicks btw. Pacience and lots of time spent with them and you will get a pet.

Why choose! Sit on the fence and have both!

I have both because they are totally different. The quail grow fast produce early. The chickens are larger more colorful. Both are fun and have their uses.

Get both! Learn to compromise...well...just allow the addiction to control you

I'll have both.

The town limits "crowing fowl" to 5 per house, and then lists out what it considered to be crowing fowl.....

Quail are not mentioned.

So along with my current egg hens I'll have quail for meat. Considering that my hens 5 months later still have not put out a single egg.....

I may end up having quail and letting hubby eats the hens.

I have both each serving a purpose. I like the quail eggs though they have more nutrition in those little eggs! Also it is far easier to manage quail but chickens have a lot more personality in general.

When I raise Cornish, they eat, sleep and poop. If I don't bring their food back out to them quick enough they may be so inclined to waddle over

That being said, my quail are no where near as tame as my chickens

I did hatch them same time, brooded (spelling?) them together then separated when necessary. I guess it's hard to give them individual attention like I can with chickens, because there are so many of them... but my chickens have always followed me where my quail run/fly away. Hm.... must be my aftershave
