Next year we might do quail again. It depends on what we have our hands full with. We had a bad experience last year and chose not to have them this year.

That's right...Another thing I should have mentioned. Our farm cat took the year off last year and lounged in the laundry room, so we got overrun by river rats. If you have anything like that to worry about, be aware that they find live quail very tasty.

Quail pens should be made of rat wire, at least on the bottoms.

The whole cage should be made of no bigger than 1/2" wire, I had some rats squeeze through the 1" wire on the sides of my cage and eat my white male

Clean their brooder often. They have their own unique scent. I have found once I have that yucky smell imbedded in my memory I can't eat the darned things. It probably didn't help I had the swine flu when they were getting a little too big for their brooder. Anyone want 15 full grown quail???????

Mine are in rabbit cages that are about 3' up from the floor, but they were touching the wall. Dad's barn (where they are) doesn't have inside walls, just the 2x4s and tin on the outside, so the rats were able to walk along the 2x4s and get in. I've since suspended the cages by chains in the middle of the room. So unless rats can fly, or jump quite a bit farther than I think, I should be okay
