why do quails make a purring noise? I’ve noticed it several times if I walk past them too. Is this normal? What does this mean? (I have 3 girls and usually on 2 of them do this)

I did think this but sometimes if they are on the floor and I go to pick them up they make this noise sometimes and back away. So I’m wondering could it be a danger/threat call? But it’s weird because they have a very close friendship with me and we always chill togetherI’m still fairly new at this but it seems to mean they feel content, safe, and happy? Mine do when they’re chilling out and have decided you aren’t going to eat them at the moment. Sort of a sign to the covey that things are good.
They're still small prey animals, and you are very, very large compared to them.I did think this but sometimes if they are on the floor and I go to pick them up they make this noise sometimes and back away. Ah so it’s a danger or threat call. I’ve heard it a few times when no one is around them too. (That video isn’t mine but it does sound like that) Is this a normal instinct or should I be concerned?Something has got it's attention! That's a sound they make when unsure or are anxious about some object, person, or another animal. Almost as if it 'froze' whie making the sound...built in instinct to signal to other birds in the covey that a hawk or cat or some other predator is around.
Eventhough, it's in your home, something is 'setting' it off.
Chickens and other birds do it too! My quail do it when they hear me entering their aviary or if they hear something that gets their attention. They do it to show that they are alert due to something in their surroundings or something has made them unsure or 'on guard" like a hawk or crow call. I call it their "broadcasting call" as it kinda tells other to be on alert and pat more attention to their surroundingswhy do quails make a purring noise?
