ya know, I was just thinking about my first experience with Coturnix Quail, I had forgotten until now... 1989, I was 18 and had a Sensei who had taken me under his wing as a life mentor. I needed it. He had been the hard path and finally went back to school (Cornell) and got his degree in Poultry Science- John Feldsine was his name. He had a Raptor permit and kept a Red-Tailed Hawk he had re-habbed. We trained in the "you really don't want to mess with me" style for a couple years.
One day he told me about Japanese Quail, that he had raised them in an old barn, and that primarily he needed to clean out the barn and would I like some extra money.
We went by the barn, belonged to the Ambrose family in my home town. Inside he had an industrial set up. I only realize this now looking back. He had one room with Cabinet incubators set up. He had indoor flight pens set up with a deep litter method. I mean the old dairy barn was perfect for it...
I worked for a couple days in that barn, cleaning it out. I never got to incubate any Quail at that time, he used the hatch to dispatch method and was a month away from having thousands of eggs shipped in.
but I was just thinking that may have been the first time I got Quail dust in my blood, how things work in circles and thought I would share.
and say, thanks Sensei!
