Quality of ideal poultry 's birds

I have to second (or third, or fourth) the recommendation for Ideal's customer service. I have changed my order by phone about twenty billion times over the last several weeks, and there has never been any complaint or impatience on the other end of the line. Of course, I have yet to see whether I'll actually receive what I ordered, but that's another question!

Well, so far, from my ideal order, there have been some great and some bad.
I ordered 9 chicks. 1 Black Langshan, 1 salmon faverolle, 2 blue cochins, 3 EEs, 1 buff brahma, and 1 speckled sussex, all pullets.

The black langshan is in NO WAY show quality - but she has the most laid back personality of any chicken ive ever owned.

The salmon faverolle, so far, seems to conform to the breed standards ive found/read about, and she has an AMAZINGLY sweet personality! My favorite girl out of the bunch.

Blue cochins - They actually, to my suprise, they seem to be pretty conforming to breed standards, and they have a nice color. But, they still have to mature! They are sweet, but not nearly as docile as what I thought they would be - one of them is the head chick in their little clan! But sweet girls non the less.

Easter Eggers - One died. I am very happy that both are different colors! They are pretty fighty - one is pretty sweet, though - and the other is PURE EVIL!!!!!

Buff brahma - Was, and still is, sickly, and doesnt conform to breed standards. Shes alittle stand-offish, but more nervous than anything.

Speckled sussex - I have no clue if she is conforming, but i know she has a high concentration of white on her head, which is disapproved of. Otherwise, she is a great little girl, very healthy and inquisitive.

Hope this helps!!!!

OH, and forgot to mention, they included LOTS of packing peanuts, and so far, all my chicks have turned out to be the right sex!

We have four EE's from Ideal that are pretty cool. The roo is a bit aggressive toward other roos, but has been carried around so much by my kiddos that he doesn't mind humans. The hens, well they are super. One is a begger of attention - wants to be held - follows you like a dog. The other two are a bit more up on the pecking order and don't always like to be held, but they come and talk to you and beg for treats. At night on the perches they don't mind a hug or pets at all.

I have a pair of Speckled Sussex also. The hen is funny, but nice. She has a bunch of white on her that isn't show quality, but I won't be showing anyhow. She isn't a pet per say, but comes when called and is a real loner when it comes to free ranging. Now the roo, well he is my absolute favorite. He is the Biggest pet of the entire ranch. His thing is getting a handful of scratch to eat from your hand. In fact, if you throw it on the ground, he stands in front of you begging for your hand. He knocks on my front door when he is out looking to see if I have a piece of bread for him. Now he is the opposite in coloring - lacks prominant white and is a bit more bright red than what I have seen. He has a huge comb and waddles. I liked the breed so much I have some more coming from a exhibition farm. LOL I don't forsee any shows in my future though. Just like pretty animals.

This is kind of an old post, but thought I'd reply, anyway.

I have ordered from Ideal twice, and just placed my third order. I wasn't planning on ordering any more chicks (well, you know how THAT goes!) but I noticed that they (finnaly!) had Exchequer Leghorns in stock, and so I just HAD to have some! I also ordered some Production Red pullets, since I'd been wanting some.

ANYway, I was very dissapointed in the Silkies that I got from them this winter, and sold them pretty quick. I recently hatched out show quality Silkies from hatching eggs from a breeder, and am much happier with those. Also, the two Easter Egger pullets that I got from them have the wrong comb... one has a single comb and the other is half rose half single, it's strange (I sold the rest awhile back, so not sure how they turned out). They are gorgeous though and I'm sure will be perfectly good layers (they are 19 weeks old and should be laying soon- I can't wait!)

Oh! One more thing... I got 7 Ideal 236 Leghorn pullets as well, 6 are AWESOME, simply gorgeous, 4 of them are already laying at 19 weeks of age. They have big huge floppy ADORABLE combs, but one has WHITE legs (???) and her comb is not growing or turning red at ALL... it's weirding me out! I am going to call them tomorrow and complain about that.

Here are some pics just for fun

Whenever Ideal is mentioned I try to post, even if this is an old thread. Teri is awesome, their customer service is awesome.

I've never gotten a bad batch from them and the partridge rocks, may not have been show standard, but have been awesomely healthy and EVEN GO BROODY, and that's NOT common in hatchery stock.

I've never had a chick die from them. That's also GREAT shipping luck but I haven't gotten a sickly chick once.

I will continue to buy from Ideal. I don't expect show quality from a hatchery but I am getting good solid healthy chicks.

I just love doing business with Ideal, you get exactly what they advertise. I have heard many complain of the birds not being show quality. But they NEVER ever tell you they are show quality, actually the make a point to tell you they are not. But they are pure, which is more than I can say about the supposed SQ RIR hatching eggs that I received. My RIR from Ideal are gorgeous deep red and to me look close to the same as pics of SQ RIR. But the hatching eggs, only 3 hatched are CLEARLY production reds. They are pretty birds but clearly the red is light orange red not the deep red.

BTW there are people around who have placed in shows with Ideal birds or offspring from them. You don't become a nascar driver by throwing down some money and buying a nascar car. There is more to winning poultry shows than just buying expensive birds, though many breeders would like you to believe that. I find this intensely misleading for newcomers, and most times these are the same who diss Ideal.

Ideal you Rock!!

Just wanted to tell you that Easter Eggers can have any type of comb, because they are mutts, and usually comb crosses between pea and whatever else. Just thought I'd tell ya
