Question About "Black Oil Sunflower Seed"

Sorry for the confusion everybody, I guess i should of been a little bit more concise in the way that i phrased my question lol. I have to admit that after re reading my question i was even confused as to what I was asking lol. So, I'll try it again. Should they be given In the shell, or shell less?

Thanks again!...Forrest

I have a question on this too. I have seen the ones with the shell on. where in the world do you buy the ones that do NOT have the shell?

Would love to give these to my girls as I know they are a natural source of oils. Sorry to update old thread but maybe someone can clear up the confusion that is an old hand.

Thanks
Jill

We buy BOSS (shell on) by the ton from Walmart, they special order it for us and call us when it comes in. We have been feeding the wild birds this mixed with scratch for years. Only the very smallest birds usually crack the shell off, like titmice (there are some larger species exceptions). My hens love it whole. They are happy, healthy and have not had any crop problems.

I buy them whole in a 50lb bag. We offer them as treats and sometimes I might mix a scoop in with their feed. Mine love them. Shell and all. I would imagine if anything would cut and injure their crop the sunflower seed shells aren't any harder or sharper than oyster shells. I have never had a problem.

Wow, what a bunch of confusion. Feed them whole sunflower seeds, shell and everything!

Just to clarify:

shelled=no shell (it's been shelled)
unshelled=shell on (it hasn't been shelled)
