Hi,

I'm really confused! I could have sworn that at one time I saw Blu-Kote advertised to be used on chickens, but now I can only find it recommended for dogs and horses. Have they changed the formula or is my memory unclear?

I have a minor feather-picking problem where one of my hens is missing some feathers on one side of her butt. I think this is due to boredom because I feed them 21% protein egg producer feed, so protein shouldn't be a problem. I thought I might spray the area with Blu-Kote to soothe any irritation and discourage further picking. But because of what I have read, I don't know what to do.

Does anyone know anything about this or have any other suggestions as to what I can do? Thanks!

Lots of people here use Blue kote on their chickens. Have you tried giving them a few toys? Such as the hanging cabbage head? I just put in a seed block, hung up in one of those wire cages, and it is a HUGE hit (once they figured out it was not out to kill them).

Ok, so what I gather is that this so called Blu-Coat everyone is talking about is the same thing as Wound-Kote that I buy for my horse. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I can sympathize with the fact that when one asks a question we are looking for straight forward blunt laymens term answers so as to eliminate confusion. Please clarify directly and as to the point as possible. I have a flock that is ratio deficient, meaning too few hens to Roos so I am seeing many saddle sores and loss of feathers on the hens. The other day I saw a bleeding sore that was very small, but concerned me none the less. The very next day it was unnoticable. Thank goodness as I had trouble clarifying whether the Wound Kote I had was sufficient in relation to the Blue coat others have spoken of here. It was purchased for sores on my horse and has a very deep purple hue to it. Is this the same thing you all are speaking of???

Hi,

Thanks for all of the answers but I'm still confused. Are there two types of Blu-Kote, one that is suitable for chickens and another that is for dogs and horses?

DH also brought me home a can of Wound-Kote (mentioned by a previous poster) from the feed store but I have been afraid to use it as it states on the can that it is for horses, ponies, cattle and dogs. I copied this from the can:

Active ingredients: Isopropyl Alcohol 48%, Acriflavin .04%

Inactive ingredients: Methyl Violet, Techinical Furfural, Sodium Propionate, Urea, Glycerine, Propylene Glycol, Propellents

I know that Urea and Glycerine are commonly used in skin creams for humans, but I'm not so familiar with the other ingredients.

This product is made by Farnam Horse Products. Does anyone know if it safe to use with chickens and can you eat the eggs if you do use it?

Thanks for the help!

I have a salmon fav that is getting some blue coat today.

My BWA roo is nice to all of the other hens, but her back and her head are bald.

I may have to separate and let her free range.
