I have two buff cochins about 8-9 months old. I was told they are slow to mature as a breed, is this true? I was wondering when they usually start laying eggs as they have not laid any yet. They were very underweight when I got them about 2 months ago but are healthy now. If you have cochins, I would be interested in your opinion. Thanks

I have standard cochins and I found them to be slow too. My oldest ones did not start laying until they were nearly a year old. Then as speckledhen said they laid for about 6 months and went broody.

my Gerti started laying at around 8-9 mos,She must be broken because she has still never once gone broody and she's now about 15 mos old. Japanese bantam hen won't stop going broody. And gerti is really mean to any of the babys that come near her???

My banty cochins started about 5-6m,and my leghornxcochin who is a standard who I hatched out in nov.started laying at about 5-6 and now 1 has gone broody.

My first two standards didn't start laying til around 9 months, the second two (from Ideal) started laying around 7 months and like speckledhen's all 4 of them are broody now! Silly birds! My bantam Cochin hasn't gone broody yet this Spring, maybe she is taking second shift after the Silkies are done hogging all the good nesting boxes lol.

Cochins are my favorite breed though, despite their quirks. Love their fluffiness, parenting skills and huggableness

My Bantam Cochins were approx 10 months old before the first egg. But this is the first time I've had a broody girl! I'm excited but she is not to pleased that on day 2 I made her move.
Mind you, I would never have believed it if I hadn't witnessed and had another witness witnessing it, but the handsome smooth rooster (BC) took one of the girls down for some happiness...she is a full sized EE. I am in hopes that we can witness a chick! heee hee

Good luck on your Bantam Cochins, they are such sweet and funny little birds with a giant personality!
