To make a long story short, my roommate is moving out so I'm in the process of transferring some utility accounts into my name. We had a separate bank account for our heat and electric that we shared. Well, the heat bill ended up pretty out of control and I had the gas company put us on a payment plan. Since that bill was in my name and it was important that those arranged payments were made on time, I just ended up paying from my personal checking account every month. I did not ask her for money but instead left her with the responsibility of paying the electric bill, which was in her name. I stopped putting money into the shared bank account. I call to transfer the account today and the woman told me that it hasn't been paid in months!!! Apparently, the electricity is days away from being shut off!!! They sent notices to my roommate and SHE NEVER TOLD ME!!!! anyway, I have to pay a $250 deposit to start my own account. My question is can they make me pay an unpaid bill that was in someone else's name? I don't know how much she owes but I would imagine it's at least a couple hundred.

She is officially moving out in four days and this is not the only problem I'm having with her. It is simply one of many! Unbelievable. Grrrrrrr!

You will probably have to pay a deposit, but I don't see how they can make you pay the old account if the account was solely in the roommate's name.

Glad she is moving! Some roommates can really suck can't they? I don't miss those days one bit! I miss being young and in collage etc but not having to share a home with a bad roommate!

She is going to end up on Judge Judy one day at the rate she is going.

Hang in there!

I can't believe someone is this awful and inconsiderate! This girl was supposed to be my friend! Oh well, it's going to screw up her credit and prevent her from opening such accounts in the future, right? I'll definitely look into small claims if the electric company tries to give me a hard time.

SO glad she's moving.

I dont' t know that you can sue her for money she owes to someone else. Maybe the electric company needs to sue her. I don't think you have any standing.

I was thinking this in the case where the electric company comes after the OP.
