I have a call duck who's been sitting on 4 eggs for quite some time now...I'd say close to 25 days. Can you see inside their eggs just before hatch? I checked her eggs today, and they look greyish black on the inside. Is this the duckling I'm seeing inside the egg, or are the eggs rotten? They don't smell bad.

Yes you can candle the eggs and should see moving embryos at this stage but I wouldn't toss them out even if I didn't see anything moving. Rotted eggs definitely stink and have blobs of floating junk in them. I don't know how long call ducks take to hatch but I have Rouens and they take 28 days.

Thanks ruth. I didn't actually candle them...I just picked them up to look at them. They don't look white in color anymore...they're more of a darkish grey all over...so I was thinking maybe they were rotten, but they don't stink, at least not yet! I was so afraid one of them would explode in my hand.

Maybe the grey color I'm seeing is actually the duckling inside?
