We got our first egg today!!!! My husband heard lots of squawking and carrying on and went out to see what was what. One of the hens was in the nest box but had not laid an egg at that time. When I came home from work we went out to see and there was the first egg. It is small but has a little smudge of what could be blood on it. I was wondering if this is normal for the first egg? We are not sure now which one it was. They look so much alike.

I'll post a picture on the picture of first egg thread.

Congrats on your first egg.
Yeah, the first ones can have some specks of blood, be odd shaped, strange colors. All normal for new layers.
As long as there is not copious amounts of blood in the nest box or on the hen's bum, I wouldn't worry about it.

Congrats on your first egg

All my hens first eggs had little smears of blood on them, OUCH

Another hen started laying today and now we have gotten 4 eggs. The hens we have laying are Barred Hollands. They are supposed to lay white eggs, but these are more light tan. I have wondered, like someone on another thread, about the strains of the really rare chicken breeds and how close they are to the standard. Does anyone else with Barred Hollands get white eggs or ivory or tan colored eggs?
