Question about goat feed

ive been feeding my goats purina goat chow, twice a day..mixed with baking soda and loose minerals and they seem to be doing ok. they didnt like it at first but now, they lose their minds over it.

Goats have specific nutritional needs. They need a lot of copper in their diet compared to other livestock. A good goat chow will have everything they need. I am sure that prurina makes a fine goat feed. The medicated feed should tell you on the label how long you should avoid the milk (you might not have to). It will not hurt the goats. You can also contact purina and get the info you need about drinking the milk. Sweet feed will not have all a goat needs. You can give it to them as a treat. It will not hurt them either.

Two of my does kidded last year with no problems at all. One had twins and the other had a single. Both were on medicated feed. That is all I feed my goats. What they really like is chicken feed!

i use 12% all stock from tsc, they have done well on it, they also get sweetlix meatmaker loose mineral, it has the much needed copper in it, my goats love it

That medicated, pelleted meat goat feed is the next best one you can buy!!! Keep it! Use it!

I have gone into great discussion about sweet feed (ie all stock, etc) and goats. Bad, bad, bad! If you insist on feeding all stock to goats...do a little research on corn + goats. Acidosis. Ketosis. Hypocalcemia. Corn is junk, and actually detrimental to your goats health.

Also, for those of you concerned with Decoxx and Rumesin with your dairy goats...PM me for an article concerning the two drugs and milk production. I will not post either way on the subject, did not (obviously - no scientist here) have anything to do with the article. Good reading..

Helmstead, so you would use the meat goat feed I bought even though it specifically warns not to feed to goats producing milk for food?

I use "sweet 12" made by Nutrena. It is a textured feed...containing lttle bits of various feed materials not pellets. It is considered an "all stock" feed and is unmedicated. I also use this feed for some of my horses that are not competeing instead of my regular horse feed which has a higher fat content...Viltality ultra preformance...Sweet 12 seems to have less corn in it than other textured feed that I have tried...and I agree too much corn is bad for any animal...unless you like alot of coughing. Left unsaid; unlimited free choice grass hay and sweetliks goat formula mineral block.
Around here the sweet 12 is several dollars per bag cheaper than the specifically formulated goat feed....I guess money talks and I don't know any better.

Nah - still avoid the sweet feed - they make it pelleted. AC isn't the silver bullet for UC, and feed with AC added isn't available in all parts of the country.
