Hey all I just lost a hen to Infectious Coryza. I have been medicating all my birds since the hen first got sick but she still died. Now my one of my roosters eyelids look a little swollen. My question is after this clears up would it be safe for me to put new birds with him? It broke my heart when my hen died and I don't want to put more birds with him if they are going to get sick as well. I have two other hens with him and they have shown no signs of the disease.

So what would you recommend? I would like to add more birds to my flock so I can start breeding them. But at the same time I don't want them getting sick and breeding birds that are carriers of a disease.

The chickens remain carriers for life, you cannot cure them from it. If you put new birds in with the infected ones they will become infected too. I have dealt with this before, the best thing to do is cull and start over. Disinfect everything so nothing else catches it.

What about my other two birds that are with him? They show no signs of the disease.

The vet I have in my area doesn't do anything with chickens other than eat them. They are completely separated from my other birds and have not had any contact with them.

I just received a phone call from my parents they are out at my place and they said that my rooster as well as a couple other chickens that have never been within 30 feet of him have black spots on they're combs. I've been looking around and I came across a disease called fowl pox. It says that the wet form affects the upper respiratory tract. I'm wondering if thats what my birds have instead of coryza. I believed it was coryza based on the fact that my hen that died had swollen eyelids, was lethargic, excreted mucus from her eyes that caused her eyelids to stick together and she had a foul odor coming from her head. What do you guys think?
