I live in a coastal riverine area with a ton of wild canada geese. People hit them very often with cars, as they are so slow to cross the road. I wonder about the decoys which are advertised as scaring geese away from a lawn area (a plastic owl statue, a spinning coyote silhouette, a hanging predator eye shape made of reflective material that spins in the wind, a goose distress signal played over audio) - I wonder, if you were to go so far as to actually place one of these things as a hood ornament, would this cause the geese to get out of the road when your car approaches. Particularly the predator eye silhouette, as it seems both a cool car ornament and less obtrusive. I am told geese quickly get used to all of these deterrants and ignore them, but that motion serves to increase the learning time for that. A car is in fast motion. I am told that the coyote silhouette is improved if actual coyotes are also present in the area and occasionally prey on the geese. Cars around town will always occasionally prey on a goose... I wonder if geese would associate a silhouette or something on my car with other cars and avoid them more, or increase their response time in running. I wonder if this idea worked, other people might adopt it if it was cheap and low profile, as it improves everyone's lives, the geese, the clean up crew, the five year old, and the driver. The only bad thing I can think of is geese with goslings crossing a road and fleeing my car right into the opposite lane of traffic and getting smacked, but this would not occur on all roads. What do more knowledgeable people think of this idea, would it work? I know of a spot with a coyote silhouette, a golf course, in town, the silhouette totally works, very few geese in the area...
