Ok so, I have a five toed Welsummer cross hen and I have noticed lately that the fifth claw is growing incredibly long. So, I was wondering if five toed breeds claws need to be trimmed? Because you know four toed breeds are always keeping their claws trimmed from constant scratching, but five toed breeds have no ground access to the fifth toe. Any tips on how to trim it?

I sometimes trim the nails on my silkies as they have five toes. I trim mine just like i do my dogs, with nail clippers, but just like dogs they have a quick running through nail so be careful. If you cannot see quick, then just trim a bit, wait couple of weeks and trim again. Make sure you have on hand something that will stop bleeding,in the event you hit the quick b/c it can bleed quite profusely.
