I have an 11 week old Golden-laced Wyandotte, I've named Emma, that has had loose stools since Day 1. Other than that, she is fine - she's eating and drinking well, socializing, and seems completely content. Her vent has stayed clean, too. I don't need to post a picture of what her poop looks like because it looks exactly like liquid chocolate.

Is there some over-the-counter product that I can give her or some type of food that would help her? I ordered Emma along with 2 other Wyandotte chicks from Meyer's Hatchery and all three were vaccinated for Marek's disease. All three are eating the same thing: chick starter from the co-op but she is the only one with the problem. Does a vet need to get involved?

Thanks so much for any advice you might offer!

If this youngster has had this runny poop since day one and is otherwise healthy, it may be her "default style" of poop.

I have one of these myself. When I brought four two-day old Speckled Sussex pullets home from the feed store six years ago, one gave out a fierce "splort" of watery poop. I thought she was probably sick, but she was normal in every other respect.

She matured and began laying, and is still laying normal regular eggs at age six. But she still has runny, brown poop after all these years. I even had to make a special shield to place behind her when she's on the roosting perch at night so it's easier to clean the wall behind her sleeping spot.

Now, that said, on the off chance your pullet has a case of diarrhea, offer her some applesauce with a little molasses mixed into it. If she has diarrhea, this should help. If she doesn't have diarrhea and runny is her regular style of poop, she will still enjoy the treat.

Ha, ha, that's funny... "default style" of poop! OK, I'll keep that in mind because she does seem perfectly healthy other than that. I'll try the applesauce. Have you ever heard of yogurt helping out? I thought I might try that, too.
