He is a very pretty boy. I think I read that the standard that the Marans_Chicken_Club ended up providing to the APA was not their draft standard, it is the French Standard. And that standard calls for feathered legs.
That's not to say you can't show him, if he is clean-legged. (I can't tell by the pic). Since there is not an official standard and they are not yet accepted, you could technically bring another standard with you and give it to the show manager ahead of the show to share with the Judges if they would like to see it. I'm just saying I believe that the people who are putting forth the big effort to get Marans APA approved, gave the APA the French standard and that might be what the APA will be using for their Judges.

That's what I was about to say. Someone I know was at the nationals and heard them discussing things with the judges there and they decided to go with strictly feather legs in all varieties. From all the posts I have read in various forums, most feather leg genes are dominant, and one kind is recessive, but not usually in Marans. If someone wants feather legs it ought to be very easy to add to any line in one generation. Good luck, He is a good looking roo, plus he has a tail!

Thanks so much guys!

Oh, thats too bad. Yes, hes clean-legged. Really drom? Would they go ahead and judge him on that, or just judge him upon appearances? If they dont, do you think I could still get the judges to tell me how close he is if i provide the breedstandards?

From what I heard, clean legs are a DQ, or disqualifying fault. You cannot show clean legged birds if that standard is what gets voted through. I have a friend with dark lying feather legged marans, if you need eggs this spring to "feather up" your flock next year. You can still have the same great birds, and you don't have to breed for heavier feathers, just enough to get them past the judge

Not good for me if it does! Well, since I dont breed marans as of now (I just have a bunch of breeds in the same pen....actually breeding for olive-eggers soon) Im just in the boat with my lovely boy. Thanks, though - I may have to look into that when (not if LOL) i start breeding marans.
