I have a large package of chicken in the freezer that I originally bought in late June to cook for Charlie Girl before she passed away.
Now I'd like to thaw it to make our puppy his food, but it's a large package and I only need a small amount for one batch.
How can I thaw it enough to get some of it out and return the rest to the freezer?

As far as I know, that can't be done safely. I'd thaw it all out, cook it all (boil it down, whatever, if you're going to use it for dog food--I do make my own dog food & that's how I'd do it) use what you need now & re-freeze the cooked rest of it. You could do some brown rice & veggies--peas & carrots, broccoli, green beans, & mix it up & re-freeze it & there you have dog food for the future.

hmmm, that's pretty smart - I was gonna suggest hacking at it with a meat cleaver until ya chipped off enough to cook for him, then throw the rest back into the freezer

Hacking at a hunk of frozen meat with a cleaver is a disaster just waiting to happen. Please thaw it, cook it, take the meat off the bone, chop fine and mix it into cooked rice and vegetables for your puppy food as Terri mentioned. Then you can freeze the food and use it as needed.

I cook for my mini poodle: 1 lb. ground turkey, 1 cup of brown rice or barley, 2 1/4 cups water, 1 small diced sweet potato -- 12 minutes in the pressure cooker then add 1 can or pkg. thawed frozen green beans mixed in while the rice/turkey mixture is still hot, then package in freezer containers and frozen. So easy I could do it half asleep.
