Question about the blues...

If they have the quality you want and do retain their sheen, I would use them. Those that are more of a 'flat' black make nice pets. There is nothing really 'wrong' with them, just not a desirable trait.

You can breed them back to blues or splashes.


Black bred to Splash will produce 100% Blue birds.

Black bred to Blue will produce 50% black and 50% blue birds.


We did have somthing sticked about the blue genetics but I dont know where it went. LOL

The % is based on an average of 100 chicks hatched.

Blue x Blue = 25% Black (without the blue gene) 50% Blue (with one blue gene) 25% splash (with two blue genes).

Black x Blue = 50% Black and 50% Blue.

Black x Splash = 100% Blue.

Blue x Splash = 50% Blue and 50% Splash.

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

Sorry, I don't mean to but in, and correct me if I am wrong, but are those transposed?
Don't the blues end up with two blue genes and the splash have one blue gene. And if not, could someone explain it to me, or point to a direction where I can get more info.

Is the splash gene a specific gene or is it a combination of genes?
I have had white splashes in my Andalusians, and also a distinct pale blue splashes. In the reading I have done regarding Andalusians, I only hear them refer to white splash.

The above is correct. 1 blue gene will give you a blue bird. 2 blue genes produces a splash.

The blue gene is really a modifier of black. It changes black to blue by diluting the black.


1 blue gene dilutes a black bird to blue.
2 blue genes dilutes the black bird all the way to white with splashes of blue leaking through. It is an overload of the modifying gene.... like putting too much bleach in the laundry.


A black bird has 0 blue genes.
A blue bird has 1 blue gene..... just right.
A splash bird has 2 blue genes...... too much dilution.
