There is a new detergent put out by Tide called Total Care that is formulated to preserve colors. I have been using it for a while on my colored shirts and blouses and it really seems to make a difference. It is a liquid and comes in an orange plastic jug. I use cold water but I really don't know if that makes a difference or not. It is pretty concentrated so be careful you don't use too much or you will have to rinse two or three times.

Down here we call it the dasher, unless you are actually in the washing machine business.
I think you got some good advice- if you don't want to hand wash or dry clean, wash them on cold and use the delicate cycle if you have it; if you MUST use the dryer, use it on low.
What she said. I'd use the delicate cycle with cold water.

I don't remember how much it costs and there is no price I can read on the jug. I can tell you if was real expensive I wouldn't have bought it. Anyway, I just use it on the clothes I care about, and a little goes a long way. I did have to look to find it. It was hard to find on the shelf. I think it was worth it. After several washings my clothes still look and feel new.
Growing up, mom would always put salt in cold water to "set the color" on clothing and keep the dye from coming out of the clothes but I think the dyes they use now are different.
I have used both the tide and the woolite and find them both effective. I just buy which ever is on sale.
I've been using the tide total care since it came out along with downey total care and have noticed a huge difference in the appearance of our clothes. I wash and rinse in cold water and use the dryer.
