Our flock turned 20 weeks old this past Sunday and we got our first egg. It was very small, smaller than a ping pong ball. So far this week we've gotten about 6 eggs, they are all about the same size.

First question, when do they start getting larger?

Second question, is there any reason to NOT eat the first few eggs?

It is alright to eat the first eggs! :) what kind of chickens do you have? My first few were small, a golf ball size or a little bigger. The second egg I got from my leghorn was huge!! They will be different sizes the first few weeks. Certain breeds lay different size eggs, so if you have a chicken that is known to lay small to medium size eggs at full growth, then their first few eggs will be tiny. It's so exciting getting the first eggs! :D

We have Barred Rocks.

Their eggs will get bigger for sure! They lay nice large brown eggs! My mom has some, really nice. Here in the next few weeks, you will see a difference! :)

They start to get bigger with the next egg, but it takes so long its hard to notice. If you are not weighing them, then one day as your putting them in the egg carton you notice they take up the whole space instead of rattling around. In say two months.
Why not eat the first eggs? They might be a nice expensive nick knack in the trophy case. Still they are eatable.

I find it takes about 2 months for the eggs to consistently have a nice size to them. And along the way you can still get shell-less eggs, tiny eggs, yolk-less eggs, eggs with weird shapes, lumps and bumps on the shell, ridges, cone eggs, etc.

New layers swing from one end of the spectrum to the next. One day we got small eggs the next double yolkers- the egg size even made me wince. We've also had some soft-shelled eggs too. It's all apart of the process. Mine have been laying almost a month. The first eggs should be eaten with much joy and fanfare!
