Re-gift it to someone who needs or likes whatever it is.
Last year, someone gave me a new x-large throw. We have many blankets and throws, and I knew it would not be used.
An elderly lady at our church had knee surgery around the same time, so I re-gifted it to her knowing she would use it.

...I used to say thank you and later give it away

I got older so less endurance....I still say thank you, but added please don't give me anything..I am old, don't have time to dust/clean the house like I used to, can not eat certain food. I am happy that you hang out with me..that is all I wanted.

...But some people are just not get it....I still get things, so I still say thank you....and off to the charity box it goes.

Lately I have been receiving chocolate/biscuits box/tins for Christmas and I am NOT happy. I say thank you and now added you will visit me in the hospital when they chop my legs off having diabetic from eating too much sugar....the painful look on the face...I am old enough to not get send to hospital with lazy gifts.
