We have a 100+lb white fuzzy beast that almost everyone wants to pet when we walk in the park. I get that they just want to dig their hands in his fur. Most people will ask for permission. Regardless if they ask or just start approaching, my response is always the same -- "I'm sorry, he's not a petting dog and doesn't care much for people" and they quickly move on. He's excellent staying by my side when I stop to speak with people, however, you never know what erratic movement by a stranger could cause your dog to react in protection of you. We keep our distance for safety.

Great Pyrénées?

I don't take THESE dogs out in public just because we live so isolated now. I wouldn't let anyone pet Jenny because it would stress her. She wouldn't bite, but she's timid. Sammy loves people.

But in the past I had two lovely Shelties I took out a lot. When people approached I'd ask if they'd like to help me "train" my dogs. Of course they'd say yes so I'd say, Okay, I'm teaching them manners so just don't pet until I tell you to. Then I'd give a hand signal for Sit-Stay, then say, Now you can pet. The dogs would sit calmly and I'd thank my "helper." I never reveal my dogs' names in public.
