Tater -- cool name --- and I love the hounds.I probably wouldn’t care with Tater because she’s an attention hound but my other 2 are unpredictable so petting them without asking may be a bad idea

Agreed. It's in poor taste. I have never once myself asked to pet another person's dog -- it's just not necessary. I expect the same from others but that just doesn't happen. For me I don’t care at all how friendly the dog is. It’s the principle of the matter that it’s unacceptable.
Yep. Well stated Blue. Had this experience myself with a neighbor.Because people are idiots. What's the first thing Joe Q Public says when he knows your dog's name?
"Corky, Sit. Sit, Corky, Sit!"
Listen my dog knows Sit, okay? He helps teach my dog obedience class and has done for six years.. He also knows who his mommy is, and it ain't you. He is trained to IGNORE strangers. He will let you pet him, but he's not going to jump in your car, or follow you, or come when you call him or take treats from you, or obey you in any way. He's MY dog. Nachos. Mine. But to spare him from fools like you*, if you ask me his name I'll smile and say something friendly like "Fluffy." Which is not his name but makes you feel good.
Not YOU, you, John Q Public "you." Lol.
I love that storyAgreed. It's in poor taste. I have never once myself asked to pet another person's dog -- it's just not necessary. I expect the same from others but that just doesn't happen.
Once I was walking our (late) hound dog through the neighborhood and a lady that was jogging ran right up behind us and immediately bent over and reached down to start petting my dog. It happened so fast and surprised both of us he turned and barked and attempted to bite. I did not correct him. This dog loved everyone and didn't have a mean bone in his body. The surprise caused the reaction. I couldn't resist the temptation to train her for the moment and told her to never approach a stranger or dog from behind in such a manner ever again or she may be bitten (by both dog and owner). I was irritated and couldn't believe she was that disrespectful.
LolYeah I don’t pet others dogs either usually. And even if people ask I don’t let them pet mine, but I always appreciate them asking. That’s hilariousFor myself, I never pet or ask to pet another person's dog, any more than I would handle their child. I've had people urge me to do so, and even ask me if I'm scared of their dog, so I educate them. I've also had people thank me for my courtesy. One lady tried calling my dog and got very offended when he continued to sit beside me, smiling politely. She kept saying, Dogs like me! Why doesn't your dog LIKE me? It was as if she didn't hear me when I tried to explain he was trained not to obey anyone but me for his own safety. Yes, but why doesn't he liiike meeee?....Lol

Yes. Pet your own dog.Pet away, I wouldn't care.
I thought dogs were for petting![]()
I was kind of thinking the more others pet it the less I have to.Yes. Pet your own dog.
That's okay, your dog probably thinks you are.I was kind of thinking the more others pet it the less I have to.
I'm not the best dog owner.
