Hi,

I have four 12 week old SLWs and I suspect one or two are cockerels but it is still hard to tell and no crowing yet. BUT I was getting all the chickens wet yesterday afternoon to help deal with 106 degree weather and notice one of them has some shimmery green showing up on the black parts of his back feathers in a couple of places ... is this an indicator that it is a boy?

I know pictures will help but won't get any of them until the weekend and was wondering about this ...

Thanks!

I've got the same question. I have a 12 week old gold laced wyandotte, and the black lacing on 'her' wing feathers is a very pretty iridescent green.

Sorry to piggyback, but I was planning on posting nearly the same question!

I have a SLW cockerel that has irridescence in his all-black feathers, especially the tail. The pullets are not showing this.

Gut I also have noticed irridescence in the black portion of the lace pattern body feathers of the GLW pullets.

I havent seen any green feathers on my female SLW hens but my rooster sure does have some of that green in his tail. I'd day thats a rooster

I think it's just the makeup of feathers,it takes colors to make black and when the sun hits em' it's pretty.I have a sumatra that has purple and redish and blue stripes in her feathers. It makes birds so pretty.

Hmmmm, well I am still confused here! Boy it is hard to tell cockerel or pullet with the SLW's! My RIR is much more obvious on her girlness! I will have to post pictures and get some opinions on all four of the SLW's soon.

Thanks for the input everyone!
