Question on thermostats

QUAIL JAILER THAT WAS FAME! i CAN'T SPELL OR HIT THE RIGHT BUTTON.

Well thanks hon, I guess the legend precedes me...

SORRY IF- I come off as, well- what ever? Didn't mean to . just trying to made my / our point. and maybe add some humor if posible. good luck to you.

Ok I tore the workings out if a small freezer to turn it into a BSFL colony. I found what looks like a thermostat with a knob and I long copper wire that appears to be the thermo wire.

Is it a thermo and if so will it work in an incubator and if so how good?
What kind of thermo is it?

Yes, it's the thermostat but the range is not appropriate for an incubator, it's likely in the 0° to 60° range not the 95° - 105° range you need for an incubator or the 50°+ for a BSFL....

Why don't people use the A/C thermo? Accuracy?

I thought about using an AC digital thermostat that I had laying around, but then realized that the control temperature range only went up to 90 F which is not enough.

If you're thinking about the mechanical coil type I supposed it'd work, but then you have to deal with rotational accuracy since they all seem to use those mercury bulb contactor.

I used this thermostat from Amazon. A little more expensive but easily programmable, accurate and has temperature swing as little as .5 degree C.

Can you elaborate on using the old freezer as a BSFL colony? Do you control temperature so it'd sustain during the winter? I'm getting into BSFL and interested in how to keep it going year round. Thanks.

Yes. The BSFL will hibernate during the winter(below 75) not that we have much winter in South Alabama. I'm not positive that it will work but it's worth a try. The worse that will happen is they will hibernate. I figure the insulation in the freezer will hold in the natural heat of the process and if need be I'll drop a bulb in for added heat.

Refrigerators and freezers are used to make awesome incubators all the time which need a constant temp of 100* so it should be fairly easy to keep it at 84* which is optimal temp for BSFL.

Or at least that's the theory in my head.

Btw. On the hot water heater thermostat, I have found that if you build a barrier between your light bulb and the egg/hatching area you don't have the residual radiant heat emitting from the light bulb increasing the temp after the thermostat kicks off. I'm currently using a hot water heater thermostat that is completely unmodified. The temp is holding between 98.5 and 100.

So I went ahead and drilled holes in my thermostat and it's consistent within 3 tenths of a degree. Hot water heater thermostats work guys.
