Once a rooster mates with a hen, does the hen make a nest and lay eggs,!? Or what happens!? I'm clueless..

Yup.I am a little befuddled with your question.![]()
Hens do not need roosters to lay eggs.
If you don't provide hens a place to lay, they will lay their eggs any old where. Some are more savvy than others, and choose a hidden spot, but there's no nest building going on.
Most hens just lay eggs and go about their business with never a thought for motherhood. Just lay and leave, lay and leave, lay and leave.
Hens can go broody - that is, NOT leave the nest for 21 days - whether there has been a rooster with 'em or not. Chickens aren't always very smart.
I hope this helps provide a clue or two.![]()
And yup.Hens aren't like wild birds (sparrows, robins, cardinals etc.) because they can lay eggs almost daily without a rooster. But for fertile eggs that can be hatched then ,you need a rooster.![]()
I had no idea about fertile and non fertile eggs either when I started with BYC.
