I also feed an all in one type feed. The calcium in layer is too much for non producing birds, plus I like mine to have a little extra protein. Oyster shell and egg shells supplement calcium for the layers. Don't mix it with the feed or you might as well buy layer feed. Just toss it on the ground and they get the natural behavior of scratching for food also.

our flock won't touch the oyster shells unless its mixed in with their feed. It will sit on the floor until I clean their coop if I toss it around for them.

Help please, I have 13 laying hens. I have been noticing less eggs through the winter which I understand, but within the past few weeks with warm to hot weather I have caught them eating there own eggs. How can I stop this it's really beginning to be a bother. I have angle their nest a little to have the eggs roll down into a trough but now a few of them are laying on the straw floor. Then they eat them. What has happened all in the sudden.

We had the same problem. I tried everything but the only solution we found was to get rid of the hen that was breaking them open. Once the egg is cracked they will all eat it but there is usually one particular bird that will crack them open, keep an eye on who goes for it first and get rid of them. Ours was going as far as stalking the other birds when they were trying to lay so she could get under them as soon as she laid to get at the egg.
