Questions about a little time outside...

How old are your chicks? I've been wondering the same thing. Mine are 2.5 weeks but I live near the ocean so we're pretty windy here and that's got me keeping them in. Obviously your location might be more Sunny but I'm still curious.

Also silly question - if i put the grit in another container, will the chicks know it's not feed? I don't want them to eat the grit like it is feed and not get enough caloriese/nutrition!

They might gobble it a bit when you first supply it, ours did. But they won't mistake it for food. I guess they just need to load up their gizzards at first. After that they just nibble what they need. We started giving ours grit about two or three days before adding treats like mealworms, a little chopped greens, etc., just to help tame them.

I raised my last group of chicks outside from the start, and I feed unmedicated. I know my adult birds have had coccidiosis before so yes I keep Corid on-hand just in case. None of the chicks got it though, so I feel comfortable with the idea of early exposure to try and build immunity.

I personally start giving them grit right away, because they are outside and will pick up stuff that's not their feed. I sprinkle small amounts onto their feed every few days, so they're much more likely to eat some, but cannot gorge on it.
