A few weeks ago my friend texted me to ask if I wanted an orphaned baby duck. I keep chickens but don't have a pond so I never planned on getting any ducks. But being an animal lover I couldn't say no. So she brought this tinny little fluff ball over an told me she found it wandering in the park trying to follow a mallard family but mama duck kept attacking it so she scooped it up. It's definitely not a mallard and looks a lot like a khaki Campbell to me but I'm no expert. Anyway he was pretty sick looking so I planned to keep him till he was healthy and find him a home with someone who had a pond and other ducks. Then I realized he was blind. Seeing as he will need special care and because I am rather fond of him he is going to stay with me. I've never kept ducks so I just need some advise as to how to set up a pen. I was wondering which would be better a baby pool that I could dump and hose out or a fish pond with a real good filtration system? He gets along fine with my chicks but I think he needs a duck friend what's a good laid back breed for me to get that hopefully won't pick at him? Also how big should his pen be?

Bravo, for you!!!!

You may want to check for corneal worms - I don't know much about that, but I recall reading something somewhere. Blindness has numerous causes, so I will not assume that's it.

If you are feeding chick starter, I would be adding a tablespoon of brewer's yeast (not baking yeast) to each cup of food for two or three months - it is a great supplement especially for nervous system development.

Here is a sticky with loads of information about raising ducklings.
