Designing coop for 3 chickens. I am interested in using the Deep Litter Method for two reasons, less maintenance, and two using the litter for garden. My question is I have seen two methods, one the bedding is layed on a wood floor in the bottom of the coop and the other suggests just layering it on the ground becuase it says it will help with the composting process. I would like to use just the ground with not floor. Pros/Cons? Comments, suggestions? Will I have weeds growing up into the coop?

It's obviously a matter of personal preference. There are a TON of posts regarding deep litter methods, so I would definitely check 'em all out.

Also, if you decide to use the dirt as your floor, make absolutely sure no water can drain in from anywhere. That would kinda defeat the purpose.

I used a deep litter method in my brooder and am now starting it inside my coop. By the time I moved the chicks from the brooder, there was about 8 inches of litter in there! Of course, the brooder was only 3x5'. My litter was completely dry except for the area where the water was kept. Since the area was not level, my waterer leaked a bit.

Read everything you can and choose what works best for your situation.
