We just got a new Black australorp hen today and I am not sure how old she is but I do know she should be close to laying. I have read something about red wattles and combs being a sign. I have a picture of her (not the best pic) and just wondering if anyone could tell by there color if she is close. Thanks.

Here are a couple more pics. She is bigger and her comb and wattle are a little redder than what they look in the pics.

Yes, her comb/wattles are getting that lovely dark red so she should be close. The best way to tell also is to see if she'll do the "submissive squat". If you put your hand on her back, does she 'squat' ???? If so get your nesting boxes ready!!!

I went out there to check and see if she would squat. She is still getting used to me we just got her and at first she would walk away but then when I did start petting her she would just squat down and when I quit petting she walked off.
