Getting "certified" as an organic producer is fairly complicated. If you are just going to have a small operation with a small number of hens, and to sell extra eggs, that may not be an issue. I sell my eggs to neighbors, friends and co-workers. I don't claim that they are organic technically, but they all know that I feed my flock organic layer (58 cents a pound!) and produce from my garden which is organic, etc, and that the hens free range on our 4 acres and the coop is really clean (they can see that!); the chickens are happy and healthy, and the eggs are wonderful. They pay $3.50 to $4 a dozen, and I can't keep up with the demand.

In KY you must have your birds processed at a state inspected or certified facility in order to sell them..... Also, if you are not certified organic save yourself a ton of trouble and just don't use the O word....

The first and most accepted definition of Organic is any life form based on carbon atoms. That includes EVERY living organism on the face of the Earth.
