I noticed one of my hens had a large crop about a week and a half ago. I found a local avian vet and took her to see him. I asked for a few xrays. Found out she wasn't completely impacted. He sent me home with basically a liquid stool softener, antibiotics and a med to treat acid reflux. He said she was full of grit. So only let her have pellets, keep her inside to check on stool and make sure she's passing the grit (which she is, slowly) her crop became enormous! Still having small BMs. At one point yesterday she,was gurgling. I hurried her out side and got a bunch of stuff up. Mainly liquids and broken down pellets. It did smell pretty sour, even though I couldn't smell it just by opening her beak. I did this again today, as she filled up once more. Only this time i got chunks of "thin skin" ...only way to describe it. Now, I make kombucha. And I know what a scoby (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) looks like. This "skin" my chicken threw up resembles the skin that forms on top of kombucha that makes the scoby. Does anyone have a relatable story? Could this "skin" she got up have been impacting her? I'm including a pic. I swear she's growing a scoby in her crop!

Could that be a worm?
@casportpony
No, I don't think so. It was an oval, slimy blob when I pulled it out. I rinsed it off and was left with this "skin". It just feels and looks so much like a scoby, im wondering if she should be on an antifungal med. She had smaller slime blobs come up too. This wasn't the only one, just the biggest one.

I would think the vet would have put her on that med too if needed huh?
Could you possibly send this photo(email) it back to your vet and see what they have to say??

I might. This vet is a little pricey. Figured I'd ask around first. I kept it in a bag in the fridge in case we do have to return to the vet.

I was thinking along the lines of..you vet just treated this bird, so a follow up email wouldn't cost. ??

@TwoCrows have you seen this before?

Hi @Inkedmaiden Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry you are having trouble. We will see if someone has any idea what that is. You may be right, it could be something like a scoby (had to look that up:D) I've never seen that before.

In the meantime you may want to read TwoCrows article on crop issues and treatment options, it's the best one I have seen.

X2 great info for sour crop and crop issues! Good luck with your girl. My vet does follow up visits for a small fee... $28. So hopefully yours does as well!
