Okay, I am a first time duck owner. I know nothing except I have mallards and pekins and that I love them to pieces. The mallards are 22wks. and the oldest pekins are 17 wks..

The mallards seem to have it all together, the only issue I have noticed is one of the females is enticing one of the pekins. Naturally the largest of the group and has even allowed him to mount her a few times.

The pekins are another story all together..... I have boys grabbing a hold of another male's neck and then another boy will grab onto the second ducks neck and I have three boys running around while holding onto the duck in front of it. Kinda like a Conga Line. Ummm, is this normal? They don't seem to be really hurting each other but that poor little guy in the front is not happy. Now really, just picture this, I have a line of ducks running round the yard, joined at the neck and the first little guy is running as if his life depends on it. Yeah......funny 'till you realize why he's running. Another thing, there are 3 female pekins in this bunch. They want the males but all the males do is bite them in the neck and chase them away and go back to their Conga Line. Am I missing something here?

Also, when will ducks lay eggs? It seems to me that the females are going back into the duck house every morning but so far I have not found any eggs. I have heard they have a season but isn't this time of year beyond that?

Your males are probably tousling over who is the most important. Drakes grab at necks as a tactic in fighting. Right about now they are all hormonal teenagers and probably think they are pretty awesome. It's normal for the females to show interest in the boys but for the boys to be a bit oblivious and more intent on bossing each other around, at this age. You can try being the boss and stepping in to break it up. I clap my hands loudly and try to get between ducks that are misbehaving - now clapping my hands is usually enough to get them to settle down.

Ducks can start to lay round 20 weeks so you may get some eggs soon. Gently dig around in the nest a bit - they can bury their eggs.

It's great to hear that you are really enjoying your ducks - they are such entertaining little persons! :)

Thanks for the reply!!! It would be great to get some eggs from them the first year. Not sure if I want to try hatching them in an incubator or not. As for the stepping in, I also have geese and they usually beat me to breaking up the boys. The geese really don't care for the games[?] the boys are playing and will run at them or grab a tail feather if close enough.

Sounds like the 'geese police' are on the job then

Hatching is a great learning experience. I hope you get to give it a try

He he he...they probably dislike the public display of affection

Geese Police!!! Oh that is just too funny!!! Now that you've planted that seed, everytime I see them doing something like this the theme of "Dragnet" is going to be going through my head. Thanks for that....I think, lol.

Lol, yeah, they do seem rather old lady-ish. They were giving me a hard time today because I dared to wear shorts! Everybody's a critic, jeesh.

That is totally me!! It has been in the triple digits for WEEKS and I broke out the shorts (mind you I wear my Levis year round nearly) and I swear my drake had a fit...maybe blinded him due to my transparent white legs :)

LOL!!!!! Oh yeah, just keep flashing them I say. Like I told mine," yeah? well you have knobby ankles!" Gotta get your giggles where you can.
