Just got my first two eggs this week and both times my sweet little hen sang the "Egg Song".... I only just learned about the egg song because when she started acting funny, I started researching signs if the first egg and I stumbled across some talk and a couple videos of the egg song.
So.... Is it something they only do when they first start laying? Or is it a lifelong practice? Do all chickens do it? It is so cute ❤️
When I heard it, I yelled to my daughter "Zoey, that's the Egg Song!" And we both ran outside, camera rolling, and she opened the nesting box lid to discover the prettiest little blueish green egg. A memory I will cherish

A hen is often very excited and proud when she lays an egg, even if it is her millionth one. So yes, they will do it whenever they lay an egg. I enjoy it too! i have one hen who will get in the coop and just squawk, even if she has already laid her egg for the day. It's like she feels like the only place she can sing the egg song is in the coop. By the way, welcome to BYC!

Two vocalizations I associate with egg laying. First precedes it where hen makes a wah-wah-wah sound as she approaches nest. In free-range setting I provide hen goes silent before actually getting on nest, usually a few feet away. The other is an excited cackling like sound produced when hen is several feet away from nest after depositing an egg. The latter seems to help rooster find her as she is generally ready to mate at that point. If hen is going broody, cessation of the after egg cackle is an indication the hen is going to go broody within a day or so.

Thank you for the interesting info and the welcome :)

Oh, the cackling of the hens! Yep, they'll keep doing that forever. And if you have a rooster, he'll chime in, the other hens will follow and you'll have an entire orchestra of bakka-bakka-ba! Haha!

It differs from hen to hen. Some don't make a sound, some will give it a minute or two before and/or after, and some don't know when to stop. Whatever they start doing, that's what they'll keep doing. :)

Thats exactly what happens in my coop. Once it was two hens squawking their heads off, the rooster then joined in, and it was so tempting that i joined in. Chickens are loud!

this morning I was eating my breakfast egg sandwich on my lawn chair.
I have 8 hens and 5 roosters.
a hen in the coop laid an egg and began to tell the world about it. then another joined in, before long there were 5 roosters and a few hens all singing. then it got quiet again.
until about tem minutes later, another hen laid an egg. and the whole show repeated itself again.
My wife came home , got out of the car and asked, any eggs today ?
I said, at least two..
