I'm still in my first year of chicken keeping and I'm trying to learn ad much as possible about my girls.

I've got 5 hens which I raised from chicks and 2 hens and a rooster in quarantine which will be introduced soon. Of my current girls, their vents are 'open', moist with a little bit of pink. My new girls, who haven't laid yet since bringing them home have 'closed' vents. The hens are supposed to be 1 year old, and look young in the face, and I know they haven't laid because they're stressed. Is this typical?

How long have you had the two new ones? I wouldn't expect steady laying from those two until after they're done with quarantine and have had a week or so to settle in. Stress plays a huge factor in egg production and moving is stressful! I bet once they've settled in, they'll start laying as they should!

We've only had them a few weeks. They certainly aren't settled, and certainly aren't used to my dogs barking
Once they're out of quarantine, the first week with your other hens will probably be rough. They gotta establish the new pecking order! After that, they should feel much safer and more comfortable with their new flock, and your original girls will probably help convince them that the dogs are nothing to worry about!

It's good you're looking, Kudos, important to learn anatomy in case of problems down the road.

How old are these birds?
Are any of them laying?

Were they currently laying at their old home?

Here's some tips about vent appearance and other indicators to know...

My new barred rock laid her first egg for us yesterday, and we integrated them this morning so it'll probably be another few weeks before she lays another.

The new goldeb bird has been in a nesti g box today, though I suspect it's to hide and not to lay. I'd be shocked if she laid an egg today.
