Questions about winter care

I only mentioned the 50's as a sign that the weather is finally turning. But, yeah, that kind of weather would be a money saver for sure!

So what happens to the Vasoline when it gets 60 below?

You can do that and a heated dog bowl usually works for a small flock. For larger flocks, I found that a black rubber feed pan like one would use for horses makes the best waterer. You can fill it in the morning and they can drink plenty, knock out the ice later with ease and refill later. This works also for those who have no electricity in their coops.

I have huge combed white leghorns and we got down to -26F last year and stayed below zero much of the winter, often double digits. They were fine. I tried putting the vaseline on and all I got was dirty greasy leghorns. They got mild frostbite but did not lose any comb. Only comb loss I had was on a large combed cochin rooster - he lost a few tips but was otherwise fine.
