Hi Ed62
I have an IPad and so far I love it. I travel a lot and it was a better choice for me than a laptop. I have the WiFi model not the 4G so I can't tell you about the cost of the internet connection. Most places (hotels, shops and restaurants) I have gone have free WiFi and give you the password. Airports are the exception. They charge for WiFi.
The apps are applications you can download using your ITunes account. If you have an IPod you probably already have an account. Lots of apps are free and the others are low cost. Games cost around $5-10. If you have a Netflix account you can wach movies, also. The app for that is free. NASA has a wonderful app that is free, too. Most news agencies have apps as well.
It is great if you have lots of photos of your chickens and holds all of my music. There is also a ereader app if you like to read. There are lots of book choices and you get Winnie the Pooh for free. Check out the Apple website for the apps choices. There are thousands.
I do a lot of research and it is great for that. I can sit in the living room with my family and still get work done.
The drawbacks I have encountered so far: It is not very good as a wordprocesser. In other words, if you answer a lot of emails, typing on the keyboard is difficult. They do offer an external wireless keyboard that may be better. I thought it would be useful for catching up on my TV shows but some of them will not play.
The battery lasts a long time, 8-10 hours. Do you have an Apple store near you? They are very helpful and a great place for information.
I hope this helps. PM me if you have more questions.
